As a result of horizontal ichthyoplankton screening of 10 stations at Yenişakran coasts from May 2007 to August 2008, numerous eggs and
larvae belonging to 58 species from 24 families and 8 orders were determined and 2 were identified to genus level. In the scope of this project,
2745 larvae and 859 eggs were examined and a total of 36 % of the eggs were dead. The most frequently encountered eggs were from the families
Sparidae (28%) and Bothidae (18%). Gobiidae (45%), Blennidae (34%), Atherinidae (7%) and, Sparidae (6%) were respectively represented by
highest larvae percentages. Samples of Clupeidae and Atherinidae were recorded at almost every station of the research area. The members of the
families that mostly represent the coasts of Yenişakran are typical species of the tidal zone whose adults live in sandy, rocky and algal biotopes.
Gobiidae, Blennidae, and Atherinidae are the groups which have high larval densities at the region; however the eggs of the species of this family
are demersal accounting for the fact that they were not found in plankton samples. Sygnathidae members including the species under protection
were only found at the stations representing the nearshore algal biotopes (located at the east and west of the shore). The other fish families
recorded from the research area are Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Paralepididae, Myctophidae, Gadidae, Lophiidae, Belonidae, Scorpaenidae, Triglidae,
Moronidae, Serranidae, Carangidae, Sparidae, Sciaenidae, Mullidae, Labridae, Tripterygiidae, Blenniidae, Callionymidae, Bothidae, Soleidae. 43%
of the species at the region are of economic value. Yenişakran coast is ascertained to be a significant brooding and larval feeding area localized by
the species living offshore Çandarlı Bay. The fact that the egg mortality rates are high reveals that eggs mainly having a superficial distribution are
affected negatively by physical conditions such as waves and winds.
