This study was counducted to determine the proper dose of gamma irradiation for the mutation breeding program of common Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz cv.) in Ankara ecological conditions in 2009.In the research, some characteristics such as emmergence rate (%), shoot length (cm), root length (cm), shoot fresh weight (mg/plant) and shoot dry weight (mg/plant) of M1 plants of Hungarian vetch obtained from Cobalt-60 (60Co) by irradiation of the seeds with different doses of gamma rays (0, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 Gy) were studied. The laboratory experiments were arranged in the split plot design with three replications.Result revealed that the investigated varieties showed different responses to gamma doses. The results of the study showed that germination
rate of the seeds was influenced by the application of gamma irradition. Some characteristics such as emmergence rate (%), shoot length (cm), root
length (cm), shoot fresh weight (mg/plant) and shoot dry weight (mg/plant) were negatively influenced by 140 Gy dose of gamma ray.As a result It can this study, It can be concluded that gamma radiation doses should be determined for each cultivar in Hungarian vetch to get the generation of new variation sources for breeding programs, but the gamma radiation doses between 80 and 120 Gy may be used without any changes in viability.
