Turkey is one of the countries having the richest biodiversity in Europe and Middle East. Biodiversity of a country is a part of the world’s
international heritage. The importance of educational activities to raise the consciousness of people to protect this heritage is undeniable. Pre-service
teachers who will assume great responsibility in the education of children should have required background on the issue to raise the awareness
of the children. Hence, the aim of the present study is to determine the background knowledge of the pre-service teachers about biodiversity. The
participants of the study consist of 66 first year student teachers of the Faculty of Education at Aksaray University. The data of the study were
collected through “word association” and “visual association” activities. The qualitative data obtained were interpreted together with quantitative
data. In light of the findings, it can be claimed that the pre-service teachers are primarily knowledgeable about diversity of species, ecosystem, and
the concepts of ecology but in general they have limited amount of background knowledge about biodiversity. Moreover, pre-service teachers agree
that our country is rich in biodiversity and the reason for this richness is due to the geographical location and climate of the country. Based on these
results, it is advised to offer elective courses where biodiversity is taught to pre-service teachers from their first year at university. It is also advised
to organize activities which provide opportunities for pre-service teachers to observe the biodiversity of the city and the country where they live
in. In addition to these, starting from the first year, biodiversity related background knowledge of pre-service teachers should be determined and
the instruction should be developed based on this knowledge base. Lastly, the number of the studies focusing on pre-service teachers’ conceptions
about biodiversity should be increased.
