Stage- and sex-related changes in total lipid, total fatty acids, and fatty acid composition of koinobiont solitary early instar larval endoparasitoid, Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) reared on Galleria mellonella L.(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were investigated. The effect of parasitism on the total lipid and fatty acids of host larvae was also investigated and compared to the fatty acid composition of parasitoids. Total lipid and fatty acid levels varied
significantly among stages and sexes of A. galleriae. Parasitism did not affect the total lipid and fatty acid levels of host larvae. Total fatty acids of parasitoid larvae were significantly higher than that of parasitized or nonparasitized host larvae.Fifteen different 10-22 carbon fatty acids were identified for all stages and sexes of A. galleriae and parasitized or nonparasitized host larvae. Four fatty acids dominated in the composition in both host and parasitoid species. These fatty
acids that differed in order of abundance were oleic (C18:1), palmitic (C16:0), linoleic (C18:2), and stearic (C18:0) acids. There were significant differences between fatty acid classes (saturates, unsaturates, and polyunsaturates) in all stages and sexes of A. galleriae and parasitized or nonparasitized host larvae. Our results may be beneficial for success in biological control applications.
