Although ornamental fish trade in Turkey has been an important sector for a long time, the supply in this business is
mainly importation. Based on this reality, several entrepreneurs have started to aquarium fish culture in Antalya for 10 years
to benefit from geographical and meteorological advantages of the region. The present study aimed to determine structural
aspects of the operations using data collected with interviews with 9 farms in Antalya. The results showed that small scale
family farms with a production of <700.000 ind./year are located in places near the city center. Large scale farms with a
production of 3.000.000 ind./year are located outside of the city with a distance of above 50 km. These farms also employed
non-family staff. Of the operations, 66.6% was set up between 2006 and 2011 as a company organization. Percentage of
farms set up in their own land was 44.4%. Majority of the farms (77.8%) used equity capital. Water sources used in the farms
were drilling, stream and spring with percentages of 44.4, 22.2 and 11.1, respectively. The potential to increase the
production capacity was limited, particularly in small-scale farms, due to scarcity of land and water. The number of farms can
be expected to increase considering that i. aquarium shops are willing to produce their own fish, ii. the greenhouse farmers
who are familiar with this business think that exploiting their greenhouses as fish farm would be more profitable.
