Özet

Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker that primarily blocks L-type calcium channels. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects on
histology of small intestine of high dose nifedipine, which was administered to the rats for 30 days and also effects of the cessation of the
administration after 40 days. The rats were divided into control (n=16) and nifedipine (n=16) groups at the beginning of the study. Standard
rat feed containing 125 mg\kg powdered nifedipine was given to the nifedipine group everyday for one week. During the following three
weeks, 250 mg\kg nifedipine was given to the rats with the same method. On the 30th and 70th days of the study, histologic sections were
obtained from the tissue samples of small intestine. The histological changes occurring in the small intestine were evaluated and
histomorphometric measurements were performed under the light microscope. Goblet cells were also evaluated in the sections stained with
periodic-acid Schiff (PAS) method. A statistically significant (p<0.05) decrease was observed in the villus area of the small intestine of the
nifedipine-administered group. It was concluded that the decrease of the villus area might have arisen from atrophy depending on the side
effects of nifedipine. Regression in atrophy was observed in the nifedipine-ceased group.
