Abstract

The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds in wastewater treatment effluents and surface water is a growing concern. Although the
concentration of pharmaceuticals in wastewater and surface water is very low and detected at µg/L and ng/L levels, their potential long-term effects
are emerging research area. Some pharmaceuticals have potentional effects on some aquatic organisms even at very low concentrations. EE2, is
a synthetic sex hormone, can induce the production of female egg protein in male rainbow trout at 0,1 ng/L. Pharmaceuticals can reach to aquatic
environment by different ways. They are often excreted in major forms or as their metabolites from body after therapeutic use. Sometimes the
metabolites may be more toxic than the major substance. In this paper; the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals in wastewater and environment
is reviewed.
